Definition: Topology
Topology by James Munkres, p.78 A topology on a set (topology space) is a collection of subsets of having the following properties
- and are in (are open)
- closure under finite intersections
- closure under arbitrary unions
This collection is the open sets, every element in this set is a open set
Question
Why do we only regulate that the number of intersections must be finite?
Simple Examples
Trivial Topology: Discrete Topology: is generated by every element in
Let , is a topology
Metric Topology
NOTE
This works only on metric space (where a distance function can be defined)
Consider a metric space ( is the distance function) Let be the collection of open sets in the usual metric space sense: A set is open (or in ) if for every there is an such that
NOTE
is the ball set
Think of a open set in this topology as a shape without boundary
Notation: Neighborhood
is an open set containing
is the same as
is a neighborhood of
NOTE
U is an open set containing x
Definition: Closed Set
Let be a topological space, a subset is closed if its complement is open (or is in ) Closed set is dual to open set under complementation, not under logical negation
NOTE
Note that a subset of can be open and closed at the same time or neither open nor closed
| Open sets | Closed sets | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| are open | are open | |
| closure under finite intersections | closure under finite unions | (de Morgan’s law) |
| closure under arbitrary unions | closure under arbitrary intersections | same as above |
Definition: basic concepts
closure
A closure of in is the set
The closure is the smallest closed set that contains
interior
A interior of in is the set
The closure is the biggest open set that is contained in . Or
exterior
The exterior of is , and it is open
boundary
The boundary of is , and it is closed
