Retained Earnings

Retained earnings are the cumulative profits kept in the business rather than paid out as dividends.

Formula:

$\text{Ending Retained Earnings}=\text{Beginning Retained Earnings}+\text{Net Income}-\text{Dividends}$

Retained earnings increase with profit and decrease with dividend payments.

They are part of Shareholder’s equity and connect the Income Statement to the balance sheet.
